Obituary for Mrs. Ruth Eleanor Hill (Arvelin)

With great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grand-mother and Mumu, Ruth Eleanor (Arvelin) Hill at the age of 82 on Friday, February 22, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospice. Ruth was born in Port Arthur on February 6, 1931 to the late Hans and Eleanor Arvelin. She was always a very caring person and stayed home from a young age to care for her Mumu.

The needs of others always came before hers, without hesitation. Her family was her world, especially her grand-children and great grand-children. She was a very resilient person and this was made apparent during the 14 years she raised Marilyn, Joanne and Lois as a single mother.

Her hobbies included knitting, sewing, cooking and baking; she loved to travel with Bill and they would take long road trips together. Ruth attended Our Saviour’s Lutheran church as long as she was able and she loved her time at P.R. Cook apartments, always looking forward to the planned outings, meals together with friends and the exercise classes.

She is survived by her children Marilyn (Dick) Spooner, Joanne (Grant) Gibson, Lois (Reid) Kay; grandchildren Rick Spooner, Marcia (Tony) Silveira, Kyle Gibson (Marlena Loffredo), Sean Kay, and Scott (Monica) Kay; great grandchildren Ethan and Nolan Silveira, Bailey and Brandt Gibson and their mother Cynthia Rathje, Madison Kay and Korissa and Sadie Kay. Also surviving are: siblings Dorothy Hansen, Shirley (Gerald) Gibson and Robert Arvelin; sisters-in-law Joyce Arvelin and Marie Arvelin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Hans and Eleanor (Bullock) Arvelin; first husband Wilbur C. Hansen in 1953 and second husband Wilbert F. Hill in 2008; her brothers Alex (Alexander) and Leonard (Mickey); sister Florence Maki; brothers-in-law Harold (Zeke) Hansen, and Kenneth Maki; niece Michelle Arvelin; nephew Brian Gibson and granddaughter Angela Stacey Gibson who always held a special place in her heart.

Thank you to the staff in Support Services at PR Cook Apartments, St. Joseph’s Hospital 5th and 4th floors. Especially to the staff at the hospice that made such a difference to us all during this very difficult time. We had confidence in knowing that you were always keeping her comfortable.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Ruth Hill will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 10:00AM in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church with Pastor Matthew Diegel officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association, St. Joseph's Heritage or Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

Good bye my family my life has passed.
I loved you all to the very last.
Weep not for me, but courage take.
Love each other, for my sake.
For those you love don’t go away,
They walk beside you very day.
